A domain controller is a type of server that processes requests for authentication from users within a computer domain. Domain controllers are most commonly used in Windows Active Directory (AD) domains but are also used with other types of identity management systems.
Windows Server 2012, 2016, 2019, and 2022 are purpose built server operating systems from Microsoft. Similar to the desktop counterparts, Windows Server brings familiarity to the data center for Windows administrators with its graphical environment. Windows Server also offers many server-specific features such as Active Directory, IIS, Server Manager, and much more. It is secure out of the box, and includes an advanced firewall for locking down server applications.
