SAGE’19 — Interesting original projects

SAGE. Sonic Amateur Game Expo. Exhibition of amateur games based on Sonic the Hedgehog. What is it, where did it come from and – most importantly – why would anyone even need to create a full-fledged online exhibition of games made on the basis of someone else’s intellectual property, and actively support its existence for almost two decades. To answer all these questions, the organizers of the online event made an excellent video in which they give a quick history course and talk about the philosophy of SAGE in general, and I highly recommend watching it first, fortunately someone very kind and selfless has put together Russian subtitles.

I’ll try to condense the already brief background into a couple of sentences. SAGE emerged back in 2000 due to three key reasons:

People just wanted to see more games about their favorite character, and Sega had some problems with this during the Saturn era. Sonic R and the lightly powdered Sonic 3D Blast could not satisfy the hunger of the fan base, and people began making games themselves to fill the void left by the rights holder company. But there’s a problem.

The attitude of copyright holders towards fan games has always remained extremely negative, however, if in Japan you could declare yourself a doujin artist, come to Comiket and live in peace, then outside of it any activity that goes beyond the “acquisition-consumption” cycle was perceived as a direct attack on the financial bonds of the copyright owners. And SAGE, with its appearance, was intended to show that the fan movement comes from a great love for the original source and does not set itself the goal of profiting from someone else’s property.

Finally, the desire to be heard is common to many artists, but at that time search engines were just beginning to gain mass, and large social networks and video publishing platforms had not yet even begun to exist. SAGE promised to give figures from the amateur video game front a platform from which they could express their creativity in front of a large international audience, albeit located on the other side of the monitor.

Years passed, the exhibition grew and developed: new sections appeared, its own podcast began broadcasting, people associated with official blue hedgehog products were invited to interviews. And what’s most interesting for us is that, step by step, SAGE went beyond the boundaries of the purely local Sonic crowd and began to accept almost any indie that the organizers found interesting. For example, in 2012, a prototype of Freedom Planet was demonstrated at the exhibition – a game that subsequently went a long way from a free amateur craft to a full-fledged and very high-quality commercial product. In general, in its current form, SAGE may be of interest not only to Sonic fans, but also to amateur video game enthusiasts, and then we will see what interesting non-hedgehog developments the event has in store for us this year.

PROJECT Z-TREME

I’ll start right off the bat – https://luckyhavencasino.co.uk/ a first-person shooter for the Sega Saturn by a very enthusiastic person under the nickname XL2! True, this is not yet a full-fledged game, but rather a very, very basic technical demonstration of the engine’s capabilities, consisting of assets borrowed from other games, and capable of offering only one type of enemies, four types of weapons and two miniature test maps. But it plays smoothly and without brakes, which is already very cool for an engine that must run on a console known for its problematic hardware (problematic from the point of view of programmers). The author also, as a joke, included several adapted levels from Quake in the latest build, but they work very unstable in a non-native environment, which XL2 honestly warned about in the description. The tech demo also has modes of cooperative play and playing against each other, however, field tests over the network via mednafen showed that something was not working, and the second player (in his words) was in complete chaos. In any case, a homebrew shooter for Saturn is cool in itself, and if something more global emerges from this tech demo, I wouldn’t mind looking at the result.

By the way, in the first iteration of his engine, XL2 tried to recreate the gameplay of the canceled Sonic X-treme, and it was this demo that he showed to the public at last year’s exhibition. How it was possible to come from a colorful 3D platformer to a first-person shooter is known only to the author..

Vertebreaker

Apparently, Simon Thomley did not want gaming history to remember his company HeadCannon as “those guys who ported several Sonic games to mobile phones and then made Sonic Mania,” and at SAGE’19 he announced to the people from his digital platform that work was in full swing in the bowels of the studio on a new and first truly original game. Simon didn’t say anything and attached a link to a working prototype, based on the gameplay of which you can already get an approximate idea of ​​what to expect from HeadCannon’s new creation.

And the first thought that arose in my head after what I saw: “so, someone didn’t play enough of Umihara Kawase, didn’t find an additive and decided to make it himself, for the sake of variety changing the setting to the afterlife?“And indeed, the nameless skeleton, for whom we have to play, with its habits very much resembles the main character of the “fish” series: it runs and jumps extremely reluctantly and can barely even climb a hill on its own. In order to somehow compensate for his weakness, the main character armed himself with someone’s spine, with which he can not only whip ill-wishers, but also cling to any protruding pixel and thus cover much greater distances compared to walking. In general, if you think about it this way, the hero of Vertebreaker was not shown to us during his lifetime, and his resemblance to a girl with a fishing rod is striking… It’s all suspicious.

If you have not previously been familiar with Umihara Kawase, the creation of Simon Thomley and HeadCannon may at first be quite puzzling in terms of control. It’s one thing to simply grab onto something, it’s another thing to gain acceleration in the right direction and at least gain it at all, because up to five buttons can be involved in the process: grab onto, pull up, loosen, pull up sharply, jump. Not a piano yet, but you have to figure out quite quickly which action needs to be used at what point in time so that the protagonist flies to where he needs to go. Well, it will take some time to get used to the local physics.

For those who liked the game, I have two news. I’ll start with the bad: the release of Vertebreaker is scheduled for the second half of 2021. Good: the project plans to go to kickstarter at the end of October, and Simon Tomley promises to create a new demo for the fundraising campaign. Well, you’ll have to wait.

Phantom Gear

Also at the exhibition was the Argentine indie studio Bits Rule with a demo version of its platformer for SMD, which successfully received funding on kickstarter this summer. Although the developers claim that by the time of the release, scheduled for the fall of next year, a lot of things in the game will have changed a hundred times over, now it’s quite possible to form a first impression of exactly how the Bits Rule creation will be played. AND…

The game definitely looks very nice. Well-designed backgrounds and surroundings and pleasant animation of the main character set the mood, and the excellent soundtrack also contributes to this. But regarding how the game actually plays, I have a number of awkward questions. Firstly, the level design is controversial. Due to the presence of microscopic platforms that need to be jumped onto with special care, the character really lacks the ability to take tiny steps of a couple of pixels. Each click on the d-pad results in a small but noticeable inertia, due to which attempts to correct the initially incorrect trajectory of the heroine’s jump only create unnecessary problems. There are also “blind” jumps, when it is not clear whether there is a platform below or an abyss. Secondly, the game in some places is clearly trying to encroach on the laurels of hardcore platformers like Super Meat Boy or Celeste; well, you know, when you need to jump into an abyss, in the process make a dash to the side, and then also jump, at the same time avoiding falling on the spikes. Maybe this is some kind of problem with me, and other players won’t experience this, but I wasn’t always able to get the timing right and take the right action before the character plunged into the abyss with no end. Third, jumping back after taking damage. Just… just jumping back after taking damage. Of course, straight into the abyss. Otherwise how?!

Although I have some complaints about the game, I can’t say that I didn’t enjoy playing through the first and only level available in the demo version.

Brock Crocodile

Despite the fact that the earliest mentions of this game date back to 2014, the first public demo version was released only recently. By the way, it caused a certain stir at SAGE’19, and some users waited for the start of the exhibition just to get acquainted with this amateur long-term construction.

As a result, people squeal with delight in the comments, and I am completely bewildered by what I see. An unattractive motley and flat picture, in which there is nothing for the eye to grab onto, is complemented by twitchy controls. However, before I had even completed a third of the demo, my eyes stopped bleeding, and the character began to obey commands better. Played out, apparently. There are a total of two locations in the demo version. The first is the city in which the hero begins his adventure and where he can return from time to time to chat with non-playable characters about daily needs and replenish supplies in shops. The second available location is a spacious and moderately non-linear level, which is not enough to just run from edge to edge – it would also be nice to find all the caches with treasures. To do this, the hero is armed with a pistol that can be loaded with various cartridges, as well as a multifunctional whip, which can not only bring bad guys to reason, but also cross uneven terrain.

The pistol, however, seemed unbalanced to me. Having loaded it with cherry pits, I stuffed the first boss so much that I ended up feeling like a cheater. Well, something needs to be done with the controls, since making targeted jumps with such a tiny character sprite is not so easy.

And today I will tell you exactly about such paintings that, it would seem, were doomed to success, but something went wrong.Iiiiiiiiiii, not being distracted by excess trep, drove!

What why and how: Explain the failure at the box office “Titan: after the death of the Earth” is very, very difficult, because the picture was simply obliged to disrupt the cashier and become a real hit for all times. Judge for yourself: an amazing drawing, even now looking impressive, an original plot, a bunch of stars on voice acting – given this, fees of $ 36 million except “shameful” and not to name. Perhaps the audience was simply not uneasy to see such a different picture of the cartoons of those times. But do not be afraid, “Titan: after the death of the Earth” is an amazing thing that is still relevant and fresh. Well, for sure, a movie for all times.

Second picture: Soldier (Soldier – 1998)

What, why and how: In general, the picture had great potential in due time, because you won’t believe it, but the “soldier”, this is to some extent the spin-off of “Rnoting Running Blade”, plus the floor at the helm.WITH. Andersen – the director is not the best, but he knows and loves the action, respectively, for the militant part did not have to steam. Noooooooooo, there was a failure. Reasons? Everything is simple. Absolutely gray name, a bowl in the person of Kurt Russell (we love Russell for the role of charismatic charms, and he gave a typical “silent killer with a storm in the shower”) and an unsuccessful advertising campaign seduced excellent gloomy combat fiction, mandatory for the viewers of solid militants.

Third movie: Scott Pilgrim against all (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World – 2010)

What Kinische is about:Scott Pilgrim found a girl of his dreams. But in his way there is a more difficult task: in order to meet her, Scott will have to defeat her seven former and very evil guys.

The financial side of the issue: Budget – 60 million. Fees – 46 million.

Everything and about everything: No one doubted that in the hands of the cult Edgar Wright, the film adaptation of the even more cult comic book Scott Pilgrim would become an unusual and high -quality sight worthy of the original. But the resulting ultimately surprised everyone – Edgar Wright perceived the phrase “comic book adaptation” too literally and gave out the picture completely perfect in shape, which in the instant of the eye became cult and received directly by the royal technique by the press. But the audience reacted quite ambiguously to the film – someone was delighted (among these people was me), and someone was trivial not ready for visual extravaganza and branded the film "Dummies for kids and not distant with their minds". As a result – a cult status and an absolutely undeserved failure in the box office.

Fourth failure: Mission "Serenity" (Serenity – 2005)

What the film is about: The space "sea wolf" and the veteran of the Civil Galactic War Malcolm "Mel" Reynolds – now just the captain of the transport ship. When they took on board the passengers – the young doctor and his strange sister with telepathic abilities, neither he nor his comrades suggested what history they got involved. Fleeing at once from several powerful enemies – both from the military forces of the totalitarian universal alliance, and from the terrible cannibals of the reapers, the ship’s team did not even know what threat was hidden aboard the "Serenity".

Fees, budgets: 39 million budgets, 38 fees. Fu is like that.

Everything and about everything: What is there to talk about?! "Firefly" – a masterpiece, and fans prayed for continuation. The continuation happened in the form of a full -length film with the same team of the creators. A real gift for fans came out, really made and love made of a movie, not at all shaking the original series. But apparently the truth is a curse over the “firefly”, because as the original series was closed after the first season, the film failed at the box office, and with a bang. Here is really sad. But let’s squeeze the fists and continue to hope for the return of the Svetlyachka team for the third time. Who knows, the audit of the film at the box office, maybe we would have watched for a long time 9 or 10 season of Raynolds’s adventure and company?

And the last "gap" Gattaka (Gattaca – 1997)

Plot: Welcome to Gattaku – the perfect world of the future. Here everyone is genetically programmed, and a sad fate awaits those who were born in love, and not in the laboratory. Such is the fate of Vincent Freeman, a young man who received a shortcut at birth "is not suitable".Vincent has significant shortcomings: he is subject to passions, he lends itself to emotions, and he believes that his dreams will come true. That is why he buys the identity of another person, trying to deceive the authorities and become a respected member of the corporation of the future Gattak.And when he is already on the way to freedom, the murder threatens the disclosure of his real personality. Despite his innocence, Vincent has something to hide and there is something to lose. But it’s so difficult to stay alive when two people live in you ..

“What, how and why:” a magnificent example of the genre of psychological fiction, shot and played with chic and brilliance, “Gattaka” is a cult picture, both ours and abroad, and it is really disappointing that the such outstanding picture showed itself in the box office so weakly. Maybe it’s all about the unusual plot and the general style of retro fiction? Who knows. And if then Gattaka was an offensive failure, now the picture deservedly takes its place in the pantheon of cult fantastic films. I hope Andrew Nickkol will still be gathering strength and still remove something equally outstanding.

Sacred Gold [Game Review]

Beat mobs, level up, collect equipment to level up, get cooler equipment and beat stronger mobs. The game mechanics of the first, second, and, perhaps, third Diablo were based approximately on this principle. And people liked this meditative extermination of evil spirits so much that they gladly raked the already mentioned “Metelitsa” products from store shelves and disappeared in this adventure for months and years or… a couple of hours, a matter of taste, you know. But these games, especially Diablo 2, were so successful that they could not help but generate a number of followers. And how even more tenderly and by the hand It’s hard for me to imagine carefully bringing the Diablo clones to you, so let’s move on to them abruptly.

But first, I’ll still allow myself a small lyrical digression. The topic of clones of this or that game comes up every time a mechanic comes up in another game that is even slightly reminiscent of the one that was in the game that was already released. Give everyone technical progress, innovations and open worlds with non-linearities. But when they take already proven mechanics, creatively rework them and give birth to something new, the community around the game immediately begins to figure out whose clone this next non-AAA project is. What am I trying to get at through these fabrications?? To a simple and obvious thing – give chances to those games that are considered clones of something else and take a closer look at them. Today I suggest taking a closer look at the creativity of German programmers and designers, the game Sacred – or, as he was called in the Russian localization, Prince of Darkness.

The developer of this game was a German company Ascaron, which has been making economic simulators since 1992. Despite some inexperience in a new field for them, the company took on an ambitious project. It turned out that they were right and their first serious success came precisely thanks to Sacred. It was a worthy successor to the ideas of Diablo in the hack & slash RPG genre. This success was largely due to the fact that they supported their brainchild for quite a long time, releasing patches and additions. It was thanks to such expansions that versions of Sacred + and Sacred Underworld appeared, which together almost doubled the territory of our adventures compared to the original. A year after the release of the original game, it was released with additions as a Sacred gold edition. It was 2005 back then, and today we will focus on this version.

And what did the person see in the game itself?? First of all, choosing the difficulty level along with the hero. And if we talk about the heroes below, then I suggest you figure out the difficulty levels right now. From the very beginning, only two difficulty levels are available to the player: “bronze” and “silver”. They differ, obviously, in the level of opponents. If at “bronze” the levels of opponents are fixed and usually lower than the level of the main character, then at “silver” their level tends to the level of the hero or even exceeds it. When completing the storyline, “silver” unlocks “gold”. When you complete it on “gold”, “platinum” will open. And if you exhaled and thought that this would all end, then no. Complete the game on “platinum” and you will unlock the last, most difficult level – “niobium”. Why is all this important?? Because the same equipment, but obtained at different difficulty levels, will differ in its characteristics, and therefore niobium gear is the coolest. Therefore, for those who need a clear goal and have the patience, we can offer the task of finishing the original campaign and the Underworld campaign on “niobium”.

The graphics in the game are quite controversial – everything is drawn beautifully, but already mediocre for its year of release, especially considering that Titan Quest was released a year later, which looked great; The models of the main characters are well made and the peaceful, and not so good, extras are a little less well designed. Many enemies and allies are copied and reproduced as if on a printer, but remembering Diablo, where other opponents differed only in color, this claim becomes somewhat far-fetched. There is also no ubiquitous random map generation here, which negatively affects replayability, but plays quite well in favor of the impressions of the first acquaintance. Sometimes there are quite beautiful landscapes. And the only thing that darkens all this beauty is that some elements of landscapes and architecture repeat each other exactly. You can also sometimes see atmospheric effects in the spirit of fog or rain, which have little effect on anything other than visual perception. There is a day-night cycle. Thanks to this cycle, time is counted for tasks that have a time frame.

Ancaria is a good place to spend your holidays.

The backstory here is pretty standard for this kind of fantasy. A sorcerer named Shaddar comes into the world. He does not want to be content with the inherited wealth of his ancestors and longs to gain power, and not just power over the kingdom, but over the forces of Darkness. For the sake of his ambitions, he sacrifices his sister. However, his dark deeds were not hidden from the gaze of the community of magicians and they decided that Shaddar should be betrayed to the sacred cleansing fire. But the good king Valorian I changed the sentence and instead of the death penalty, Shaddar faced exile. Several centuries have flown over the world since then, and the sorcerer still accumulated strength in the southern deserts, terrifying the orcs, goblins and ogres. He rebuilt his castle on the lifeless rocks – Shaddar-Nur, where he began to recruit an army of goblins and improve his art in the field of black magic, while not stopping the search for a passage to the world of the dead. Shaddar needed to get there alive and return back, simultaneously forming an alliance with the demon of Sakkara..

Where would a magical adventure be without dragons??

The territory through which you will have to travel is truly huge and, in addition to various mobs, towns and tasks, you can find very interesting places in it. The most interesting of them, ironically, are cemeteries. After reading the inscriptions on the gravestones, you can at least smile or even be glad that there is a reference to your favorite film, favorite writer and even one porn actress. In large cities you can find useful NPCs, a magic chest in which you can store your things, and portals that, when activated, will help significantly reduce the running around the fields and villages of this magical world.

We will be allowed to participate in the next salvation of the world for a total of 8 characters, as usual, with their own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages.

A natural berserker who can use any type of weapon. Melee is preferable, but there is also the opportunity to use ranged combat.

The only character who has no combat techniques, but has enough spells for every taste. Here you will find auras of all colors, healing, and fireballs with meteorites.

A sexy girl with good melee potential and celestial magic that is not weak in terms of efficiency.

The last representative of a technologically advanced race in this magical world. The only hero who can use firearms and has in his abilities such things as a cannon, mines and a flamethrower.

A demon girl, tired of mortals and this world in general, but who committed a crime in her world and was thrown into Ancaria as punishment for this. The only hero who can fly and overcome places inaccessible to others.

Each character starts the game, as expected, in his own place – Seraphim in the temple, Gladiator in the arena, and Dwarf at the crashed helicopter.
Subsequently, at the wave of the writers’ pen, all the backstories of these characters converge in one place and then proceed according to the same scenario, filled with palace intrigue, betrayal and war.

What exactly can you do in Ancaria?? Kill monsters, collect loot, trade and complete quests. And if we put aside murders for a while, then completing quests becomes the main activity of novice (and experienced) travelers. Quests are divided into two main types: story quests and settlement quests. And if with the first everything is quite clear – they are the ones who will lead us to the end of the game, then with the second everything is somewhat more interesting. In any settlement, be it a city, town, castle or some other place, there are suffering people who strive not to leave poor travelers without work. It is for these tasks that we receive the main rewards, money and experience. Basically, these are banal “kill 10 goblins and bring their hearts” or “bring medicine from another part of the city,” but it is necessary to note that sometimes there are tasks with an unusual approach, with interesting references to literary and not so literary characters, as well as small moral choices that do not affect anything, but delight with their presence.

Dismemberment is a trifle, but nice.

But the tasks are the tenth thing, because we have an RPG here, after all, and it’s more interesting to talk about the role-playing system and other related things. So let’s do it that way. As we gain experience, we increase our level, the maximum level here is 216 (other MMOs will be jealous). For each new level we are given a certain number of points to upgrade our skills and characteristics. Characteristics – standard parameters in the spirit of strength, endurance, agility, charisma, physical and mental regeneration. The initial characteristics of all characters are different and, in addition to the points that are given to you for a new level, they themselves are pumped up by 10 percent of the initial characteristics.

Skills, in addition to the two initial ones, allow you to choose yourself (and if you use a little Google magic, then you can choose the first two yourself). We choose them at levels 3, 6, 12, 20, 30 and 50. They improve the character in a variety of ways: they increase damage with a certain type of weapon or magic, increase attack and defense parameters, the amount of life and regeneration, they even allow you to trade more efficiently and ride horses like a real cavalryman. Let me not describe every skill, because there are about 30 of them in the game, and detailed descriptions and optimal builds are not what you need Gotham review today.

And finally, abilities. Abilities here are obtained almost like in the first Diablo, if I’m not confusing anything. That is, they are knocked out from mobs and obtained for tasks. But unlike that system, in Sacred there is no mana in principle and you have to dance from ability cooldowns. In order to achieve the greatest effectiveness from them, skills and equipment with corresponding bonuses that reduce the cooldown of abilities will help you. Most characters, except for the Gladiator and the Battle Mage, have two types of them – roughly speaking, combat techniques and special techniques. This division is important for the reason that all abilities of the same type go into cooldown. Combo techniques are designed to somewhat correct the situation, allowing you to connect several spells in sequence and having their own cooldown.

The heroes don’t have a lot of abilities, but there is still room for imagination. Thanks to skills, you can sharpen the hero towards magical techniques or banal assault. In some classes, intermediate branches turn out to be quite viable.

Sects give no rest here either.

We will also meet useful non-player characters on our way.

Dealer – allows you to exchange goods with you. With a well-leveled skill, “trade” allows you to trade very profitably for yourself, and the assortment in stores changes for the better for the player, even though set and unique items are not sold. But be careful in your quest for wealth – “trading” is not the most useful skill in this game.

Blacksmith — allows you to forge blacksmithing bonuses or jewelry into equipment with sockets, which retains all its properties in the thing it is forged into. Also, when leveling up the appropriate skill, the gnome can do forging on his own.

Combo Master – allows you to create those same combo attacks. Also allows you to change unnecessary runes to others. He will exchange two runes for a random rune, three for a random rune suitable for your character, and for four you can choose the rune of your class that you need. As you understand, it is most effective to change runes 4 to 1. Even though it’s a robbery, it’s worth it.

Groom — sells, treats and buys horses, no more, no less.
